Nitrite (Urine)
A urine test marker that detects the presence of nitrites, which often indicate bacterial infection in the urinary tract.
Nitrites in urine are measured as part of a routine urinalysis. Normally, urine does not contain nitrites. Certain bacteria can convert nitrates (normally present in urine from food metabolism) into nitrites. When these bacteria are present—most commonly in urinary tract infections (UTIs)—nitrites may appear in the urine, making this marker a useful indirect indicator of infection.
